The skin you’ve always wanted is within reach at The Belleville Dermatology Center in Belleville, NJ.

Your Belleville, NJ dermatologist Dr. Joseph Eastern has several options when helping you combat the premature appearance of wrinkles and lines:

Fillers

Fillers come in several forms. Some products encourage plumpness in the skin by increasing the moisture content, while others stimulate the production of collagen. Other treatments are calcium-based and those that are of a gel-like consistency. Fillers work best just underneath the eyelid, with recessed scars and in hollow areas of the face. The results tend to last longer than botox, sometimes up to a year.

Botox

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is an effective treatment for wrinkles. It works by interfering with the nerve signals that the muscles of the face treated receive. Because of this, botox is better at lines that may appear across the forehead.

Routine Skin Exam

Cancer screening is a routine head-to-toe inspection of the skin. The dermatologist can perform the exam before assessing the appearance of wrinkles. Overexposure to UV light on the A and B spectrum can accelerate the appearance of aging.

When performing your daily skincare routine and treating any acne, be sure to wear sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Although the sun may not be shining, clouds trap the UV rays that work to age the skin.

You might be surprised to discover that some of the most innocuous habits could actually be aging you. Preventing fine lines and wrinkles is certainly easier than trying to treat them once they form. While wrinkles are a normal part of life and aging, there are things you can do each and everyday to keep your skin looking young and healthy so you can knock a few years off your age and people will be none the wiser.

Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen each and every day without fail is probably one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Not only does exposing skin to the sun’s rays cause sun damage and increase your risk for skin cancer, it can also cause premature lines and wrinkles. To protect your skin from the sun, always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 every day (even in the winter and on cloudy days).

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is so very important and yet not enough of us get quality sleep every night. Nights of tossing and turning won’t just leave you grumpy, tired and mentally foggy, it can also lead to wrinkles. That’s because a lack of sleep can actually accelerate the signs of aging and can also affect the skin’s ability to repair itself every night. Most adults require anywhere from 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Are you getting your beauty sleep?

Stay Hydrated

Did you know that as many as 75 percent of US adults suffer from chronic dehydration? This statistic is startlingly and could have a serious impact not just on your health but also on the health and appearance of your skin. If like most people you aren’t getting more than 2.5 cups of water a day, it’s important that you up your water intake to at least 8 8-ounce glasses per day (and even more if you’re active). Staying hydrated keeps the skin looking plump and radiant (and who doesn’t want that?).

Keep Skin Moisturized

Dry skin can also leave you prone to those early signs of aging, so it’s important that you keep skin supple and hydrated. Everyone should use a moisturizer every day, which can improve skin’s glow and also reduce the appearance of facial lines. Those dealing with more severe dry skin may need to turn to their dermatologist for more intense moisturizers.

Sleep on Your Back

If you find yourself snuggling with your pillow night after night you may soon notice fine lines developing on your face as a result. Just changing your sleep position alone can easily prevent these “sleep wrinkles”. If you want to reduce wrinkles on your face avoid sleeping on your side or stomach and sleep on your back instead.

Of course, a dermatologist offers a wide range of cosmetic treatments that can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. From Botox and dermal fillers to customized facials, laser treatments and chemical peels, there are many options out there to help you achieve a younger appearance. Talk to your dermatologist today about ways to prevent and treat wrinkles.

Ready for a younger-looking you? Find out how Botox and fillers could help.

Turning back the hands of time is something we would all like to do. While Dr. Joseph Eastern, your dermatologist here at Belleville Dermatology Center, may not have the key to staying young forever, he and his team do offer some amazing cosmetic treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers, that can refresh and rejuvenate your appearance and target those early signs of aging.

What is Botox?

Botox is a medical-grade neurotoxin that is injected into the muscles of the face to temporarily stop muscle contractions, which in turn smooths away dynamic lines and wrinkles. Any lines or wrinkles that form when you smile are ones that can be treated with Botox. This includes:

  • Crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
  • Marionette or laugh lines (lines around the mouth and nose)
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Wrinkles and lines between the eyebrows

What are Dermal Fillers?

Fillers are cosmetic injectables that contain a special substance, typically hyaluronic acid, that helps to plump up and volumize the skin while also improving skin’s texture and tone. Fillers are a simple anti-aging treatment that can smooth away lines, wrinkles, and creases while volumizing areas (e.g. cheeks) that have lost their density due to aging. Some dermal fillers can even plump up and enhance the lips.

Can Botox and Fillers Be Used Together?

Our Belleville, NJ, cosmetic dermatologists offer both Botox and dermal fillers because they work differently to offer incredible but unique results. Someone who has deep-rooted crow’s feet may benefit more from Botox while someone who has sunken cheeks may find that dermal fillers work better for the results they are looking for.

Of course, Botox and dermal fillers may also be used in conjunction with one another to both smooth away lines and wrinkles while also enhancing skin’s volume.

The telltale signs of aging skin—wrinkles, puffy eyes, age spots—may start to appear as we grow older. We can’t fight the aging process, but we can take steps now to help reduce and prevent wrinkles from appearing prematurely.

Many factors can contribute to the onset of wrinkles, which are frequently produced by years of unprotected sun exposure in combination with each person’s unique genetic predisposition. Wrinkles are a by-product of the aging process. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, is less capable of retaining moisture and is slower to heal.  All of these contribute to the development of wrinkles and sagging skin.

How Can I Slow the Progression of Wrinkles?

Daily skincare and proper sun protection are important factors in slowing the aging process, diminishing fine lines and minimizing wrinkles.

  • Take your vitamins.  Many vitamins are good for the skin. Vitamin C, a natural antioxidant found in citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables, can help reduce the appearance of sun damage.
  • Apply sunscreen.  Protecting yourself from sun exposure can help prevent the progression of fine lines. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 to protect against harmful UV rays.
  • Moisturize.  Dry skin causes the skin to look dull and aged. To prevent dry skin, apply moisturizer every day.
  • Get your beauty sleep.  When your body doesn’t get enough sleep, it produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Keep your skin looking and feeling young by getting at least seven hours of sleep every night.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit harmful UVA rays and are never 'safe' alternatives to the sun.
  • Take care of your hands. Our hands are often the first part of our body to reveal signs of aging, as they are the most used and exposed parts of the body. Protect the hands by wearing gloves, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
  • Quit smoking.  Smoking may damage more than your lungs—it causes skin aging and wrinkles around the mouth.

Like it or not, wrinkles are a natural part of aging. Even the most diligent skincare regimen or the most expensive wrinkle cream won’t totally eliminate your fine lines. You can significantly reduce the appearance of your wrinkles, however. Start taking care of your skin now, embrace your age and love the skin you’re in!

Forehead wrinkles. Crows feet. Frown lines. Dynamic wrinkles often develop from repetitive facial expression, causing these fine lines to appear visible even when theWrinkles  face is totally relaxed.

Wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process. The most common contributors to premature aging of the skin include genetics, spending too much time in the sun, smoking and poor diet.  Avoiding or limiting these activities can help prevent and lessen the effects of wrinkles.

Not all wrinkles can be avoided, and when quick, dramatic results are desired, Botox® may be a viable solution for removing wrinkles on the face caused by daily muscle contraction of your natural facial expressions. Botox® works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the movement of those particular muscles. With less movement, the skin surface is gradually smoothed, the lines begin to fade, and your natural vibrant skin strengthens and returns.

During treatment, very low doses of Botox® are administered by way of small injections. FDA-approved, Botox® is a safe and minimally invasive treatment. It takes just a few minutes and can last about 3-4 months. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated as directed by your dermatologist.
